  • JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor - Research, this position works closely with various University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and University of Tennessee (UT) systems to lead negotiations of research service agreements and clinical trial agreements. Duties include managing the accuracy, timeliness, and issuance of negotiations such as research service agreements, clinical trial agreements, contractual agreements; ensuring UTHSC faculty and staff are adequately trained, advised, and assisted on how to incorporate and/or accept grant/contract terms and conditions; and overseeing the measurement and achievement of departmental performance metrics.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Oversees the accuracy, timeliness, and issuance of incoming/outgoing contractual agreements and other agreements to ensure they reflect the proper flow-through of sponsor terms and appropriately reflect UT and UTHSC compliance and applicable federal regulations.
    Drafts, reviews, negotiates, and processes clinical trial agreements, research service agreements, sub-awards, sub-contracts, and the associated amendments.
    Manages sub-agreements by ensuring appropriate processing according to whether the primary contract is a federal contract or grant, foundation award, or industry sponsored contract.
    Negotiates and/or drafts agreements, amendments, and other documents in collaboration with faculty, staff, UTRF, legal advisors, and other administrators, as necessary.
    Ensures contract turnaround times are met.
    Shares responsibility with the Associate Vice Chancellor to ensure clinical trials and other research agreements are consonant with UT and UTHSC compliance and other applicable federal regulations.
    Maintains continuous relationships with departmental faculty, staff, sponsors, etc. involved in agreements under review.
    Provides training to UT campuses, departments, or individuals regarding research and clinical research agreements.
    Reviews processes and implements corrective actions in the administrative management of the negotiation process to represent the interests of UTHSC.
    Assists the Associate Vice Chancellor of Research establish policies and procedures for process improvements of contract and clinical research agreements.
    Serves as backup for the Assistant Director of Research Agreements, as necessary.
    Performs other related duties as assigned.



    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in business, law, or related field of study. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)


    EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years’ work experience performing contract negotiations or similar duties; OR a Master’s degree and two (2) years; OR a Law degree. Excellent negotiation skills required.


    PREFERENCES:
    Skills associated with a law degree or other advanced degree related to a contracts position in a research environment preferred.
    Experience in academic contracting, paralegal, legal or contract experience, and knowledge of university policies and procedures preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Excellent problem-solving skills.
    Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
    Ability to read and understand legal documents and compare them with UT policy, applicable law, and regulations.
    Excellent negotiation skills and a clear understanding of contracts.
    Excellent interpersonal skills.
    Ability to organize effectively, and manage and prioritize both their own tasks, as well as the tasks of others.
    Ability to train others.
