    The College of Liberal Studies (CLS) includes departments and programs in the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, as well as the School of Arts and Communication. CLS continues the established liberal studies tradition of providing many curricula leading to the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree.

    Position Summary
    The Department of Theatre Arts at the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN – LA CROSSE invites applications for a one-year instructional academic staff, Theatre Studies position beginning Fall of 2019.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in theatre history and a track record of successful directing. We are searching for a teaching historian/artist who, through their specific experience and background, can contribute to the array of classes we can teach and the range of stories we can tell from the stage, adding to the diversity of our students’ and our region’s theatrical experiences. Persons with experience and ability to help us achieve goals relative to diversity and inclusion are especially encouraged to apply.

    The Department will conduct a search for a full-time tenure-track Theatre Studies faculty member during the 2019-2020 academic year, with a start date of Fall 2020.

    The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, with 7 tenure track faculty and 4 instructional academic staff and approximately 80 undergraduate majors and minors, strives to put quality student education and support of all department members first.     Primary responsibilities will include:

    • Teaching a two-course set of Western theatre history courses covering ancient times to present day; Teaching Theatre Appreciation; Teaching World Theatre
    • Supervising practicum courses;
    • Directing one production each semester;
    • Helping to coordinate publicity efforts for productions in the academic year;
    • Participation in department activities.

    General position summary statement for UWL instructional academic staff positions:
    Under general supervision of department chair, a person in this position is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. In addition to preparing for and holding classes [face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online], teaching involves maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours. In addition, workload may involve advising students and/or providing other service to the department. Other duties may be assigned by the chair or dean.

    Required Qualifications
    • Candidates for the appointment should have or be near to completing a doctorate degree in Theatre or a related field by the start date. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2020.
    • Evidence of a strong background in theatre history.
    • Evidence of successful directing experience at the university or professional level.
    • Evidence of successful higher education teaching experience.
    • Evidence of ability to successfully collaborate with a production team.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • A collaborative and open-minded approach to working with students and colleagues.
    • Evidence of a commitment to and/or experience with achieving goals relative to diversity and inclusion.
    • Training and/or experience and interest in a range of styles including but not limited to post-modern, Avant garde, classic, non-Western theatre, African-American theatre, Postcolonial theatre, and/or theatre by and for underrepresented communities.
